The buzz of beauty and nature was all around me as I sat cozied up in my beach cabana in Maui. Breathing in, I felt awakened by the delicate bite of the ocean air. Breathing out, I felt my warm breath rise like a morning prayer. A moment of peace. I felt grateful to be present and alive.
What does it mean to be grateful? I believe living your life with gratitude means choosing to focus your time and attention on what you appreciate. I don’t think we should block out difficulties but try instead to approach those difficulties from a different perspective. Appreciation softens us. It soothes our turbulent minds by connecting us with the wonder of ordinary things that we might otherwise take for granted.
Take a moment to think of something you are grateful for: that person who helped you at the grocery store when your 2-year-old was having a meltdown, the fact that the sun rose this morning, a quality that you posses that helps you navigate the world more easily. When you are thankful, how does your body respond?
There are two emotions that mess our life up the most: fear and anger.
Gratitude takes us straight to our heart and when we are in this space we can’t be in fear or anger. Try starting your day off with 3 minutes of gratitude. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths… then for just 3 minutes bring to mind all the things that come to mind that you are grateful for. It will change your life!!!
